Amuq Valley Regional Projects

چکیده
Alalakh (modern Tell Atchana) in the Amuq Valley of southern Turkey was the capital of the kingdom of Mukish that encompassed the valley during the Middle and Late Bronze Ages (ca. 2000–1200 B.C.). Mukish was a minor power, a vassal state within larger empires. Yet Alalakh and the Amuq region as a whole have proved to be uniquely informative about a number of important cultural developments over the long span of history from the Neolithic to the medieval period. This site and its hinterland have yielded a host of clues concerning innovations in agriculture, trade, metallurgy, and political organization in what was for millennia a prime zone of settlement and a crucial corridor of communication between the Euphrates River and the Mediterranean Sea. The first archaeological survey of the Amuq Valley — the plain of Antioch in classical times — was conducted by Robert Braidwood in the 1930s on behalf of the Oriental Institute. Braidwood’s site no. 136 was Tell Atchana, which was subsequently excavated by the noted AMUQ VALLEY REGIONAL PROJECTS

Eastern Mediterranean Economic Exchange during the Iron Age: Portable X-Ray Fluorescence and Neutron Activation Analysis of Cypriot-Style Pottery in the Amuq Valley, Turkey
Two markers of regional exchange in the Eastern Mediterranean during the first millennium BCE are the White Painted and Bichrome Wares from Cyprus's Cypro-Geometric and Cypro-Archaic periods. Although these ceramics are often assumed to be imports from Cyprus, excavations in southern Turkey at sites such as Tarsus-Gözlükule, Kilise Tepe, Sirkeli Höyük, and Kinet Höyük suggest that at least some...

We completed a two-step regional analysis of a coastal groundwater basin to (1) assess regional suitability for managed aquifer recharge (MAR), and (2) quantify the relative impact of MAR activities on groundwater levels and sea water intrusion. The first step comprised an analysis of surface and subsurface hydrologic properties and conditions, using a geographic information system (GIS). Surfa...
متن کاملMorphological analysis of glaciated valleys in the Zardkuh Mountains, Iran
The morphology of glacial valley can be described in terms of power law or quadratic equations fitted to valley cross-profiles. These two models are used to study the cross-profiles of 86 valley cross-profiles in the Zardkuh Mountain in order to understand the evolutional patterns of valleys. Assessment of using the power law function indicates that b values for both valley sides range from 1.0...
متن کاملWintertime Surface Wind Patterns in the Colorado River Valley
The diurnal variation of regional wind patterns in the complex terrain of the Grand Canyon area was investigated for wintertime fair weather days using a network of wind sensors on 10-m towers. Thermally driven alongslope and along-valley circulations were present at all sites within the region, but wind characteristics varied from site to site depending on nearby topography and exposure. Along...
